Will Cheap Garage Doors Be Safe And Durable?

One of the best ways to buy cheap garage doors is to order direct from manufacturers like Chamberlain and Ideal. If you go online, these and other top brand manufactures offer their doors for sale at greatly discounted prices.

However, even cheap or discount garage doors should have the mandated safety features.  An automatic reverse feature is now required in most areas of the country.  This feature allows the door to immediately reverse should it come into contact with any object on its way down. This important feature protects the rear of your vehicle should you not pull up enough and it also protects pets and children that might wonder or be playing under the door.  Most doors, even the cheap ones will have this feature today. This feature is a part of the garage door opener and has nothing to do with whether the door you choose is wooden, fiberglass, steel, or some other metal.  Both sectional and roll up or roller doors will have this very important feature.

Any garage door today should be equiped with automatic opener typically installed in the roof of your garage, and you should have also obtain a garage door remote control device such as the Clicker Garage Door Opener or Gini for every driver in the family.  Additionally, it is not a bad idea to get one or two extra ones to keep handy for guests. Often the store where you are buying your door will throw in these relatively inexpensive devices and perhaps weather stripping as an exta incentive to purchase the door.

Since the garage door is the weakest part of any home, you will want to be concerned with the strength and stability of the one you choose.  Typically, steel panel doors are the most durable over time. Steel-line makes a good quality door that is durable in all climates whether you live in Denver, San Antonio, Kansas City or one of the coastal cities like San Diego or Seattle.  It offers a full line classic collection or will custom make a door to fit any design or style of home.  Additionally, this company will professionally install and maintain your door so that it gives good service for many years to come.  Other popular manufacturers are Wessex, Timber, Windsor, Garador, Access, and Haas.

However, the good quality wooden garage doors made from cedar are also strong and long lasting.  The main problem with cedar garage doors  and doors made from other types of timber is they have to be refinished, or repainted on a regular basis, every two years is recommended.  If the wooden doors are not properly maintained, they peel, warp, crack, rot, and fall apart, making for a very unattractive door.

Insulated garage doors are a must in most parts of the country, and closely associated with the safety features of the door is its R-value rating.  This rating determines how well the door will protect from the weather.  If you are going to be using your garage space for hobbies, auto repair or just to give the kids a place to play, you will want an R-value rating of at least 15. If you live in a milder climate, you could go as low as 6. This rating will help hold the heat or cool air in if you are heating or cooling your garage. The key to getting the R-value rating you need is to think about all the things you will be using your garage for.  Definitely, if you will be using it for anything except storage and parking your car, opt for the 15 R rating.

Opt for a low-maintenance door even though it may be a cheap one.  Unless you are handy with a paintbrush, avoid the wooden doors.  While they are beautiful when they are new, they can become an eye sore within a couple of years if not properly maintained.

Where can you find a sale on garage doors?  This best and first place to look is online.  There are many Internet sites that offer excellent doors at really deeply discounted prices.  However, when you are tallying up the final price, be sure to add in the shipping expense and the installation costs.  These additional costs can be hefty and may cause your door to not be so 'cheap' after all.

The better doors whether they are wood or metal or some sort of composite materials will generally be heavier. For example, it you are buying a metal constructed door, the gauge of the metal will be thicker for a well constructed door that the thin aluminum covering on the cheap doors.

If you are going to switch over to electric garage doors, make sure that you buy doors that have a safety mechanism installed to avoid people getting caught underneath the garage doors. This will also avoid damage being done to your car in the unfortunate event that the door closes while you are still entering or leaving the garage. Many factories already use these safety systems as a standard option but this may not be true on the cheaper garage doors.

You might find it incredible, but changing your garage doors can totally change the look of your home, and some times even directly impact the value of your property. Especially if you have double garage doors, they will make up a big part of the front of your home, so when changing and installing new doors, you will want to make sure that you make the right choices, don't settle for cheap garage doors.

When buying what you might think of as cheap garage doors, what you said about watching out for the shipping and installation costs is absolutely right on. You might think you are getting the door for say a total of $500 and then when the shipping, installation, and Clickers get tacked on, you don't have such a bargain after all.

I'm confused about the R factor, I mean I know it has to do with the insulation quality of the door, but how would a person off the street know if a door had a good rating or not? Does anyone know what to look for? I live in Indiana and I can tell you that it gets cold up here. My door has to have good insulation to protect the garage space.

Hey, you can also go down to the local Lowes or Home Depot and get a salesperson to show you the different doors. They are trained to know the benefits of each door they sell, but be on the look out because they will be wanting to sell you the more expensive doors.

That is an easy one, just fire up your computer and do a little research about the durability of each make and model. You can tell right away the cheap ones from the good ones, the good doors will cost quite a bit more and will be made from stronger material. Although, I'll agree, from just looking at the pictures they all look similar.
